Infectious Diseases Fellowship, Royal Oak

The Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program at Beaumont offers two fellowship training positions each year to qualified candidates who are board eligible or board certified in internal medicine.

Our trainees receive broad clinical experience in both adult and pediatric infectious diseases, including the following infectious disease subspecialty areas:

• tropical medicine
  
• HIV/AIDS
  
• infections in patients who have received stem cell or solid organ transplantation
  
• tuberculosis
  
• sexually transmitted diseases
  
• Hepatitis C

Trainees gain important experience in hospital epidemiology and infection control, antimicrobial management, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of antimicrobics, and outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy.

Our program provides a stimulating environment for developing and honing scientific skills in bench research, clinical research and epidemiologic research.

The faculty includes ten full-time attending staff physicians. The fellows also have the opportunity to interact with private infectious diseases physicians along with affiliated health care professionals in pharmacy, hospital epidemiology and infection control, research, and medical microbiology.

Aims

• Develop outstanding clinical ID specialists with a commitment to patient care.
• Provide trainees with unique educational opportunities not routinely available at other institutions, particularly in areas of public health, HIV prevention, and hepatitis C.
• Graduate physicians who excel in interpersonal communication skills with people from all educational, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds, with the ultimate goal of optimizing patient and family centered care.
• Promote a healthy balance between work and home responsibilities that allows for ideal functioning in both arenas.

Goals and Objectives

The goals of the infectious diseases fellowship training program are to provide in-depth training and experience in:

• general infectious diseases
  
• infectious diseases involving infants, children and the elderly
  
• infections in the compromised host including those with HIV/AIDS, solid organ transplants and stem cell recipients
  
• specific infections including sexually transmitted diseases, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and tropical diseases.

This training is augmented with additional training in medical microbiology, hospital epidemiology, pharmacology and antimicrobial stewardship, clinical immunology, and international medicine. A formal core curriculum has been structured to achieve these goals with specific objectives defined for each rotation. Approximately 25 percent of the fellowship experience is devoted to the design and conduct of scientific investigational studies.

Graduates from our program have successfully made the transition to private practice, full-time hospital-based teaching positions, university appointments, and governmental/public health positions (CDC, FDA, military medicine).
