Karen Weaver, MD
Program Director
Family Medicine, Wayne

Allow me to introduce our program by telling you a little about ourselves. We are the oldest Family Medicine Residency Program in Michigan and rest on a strong infrastructure to support our curriculum. Housed in a 200-bed community hospital, the Beaumont Hospital, Wayne Residency Program is nestled within a dominant healthcare system in Southeast Michigan. We are a full-service community teaching hospital offering all the benefits of a major tertiary hub just miles away. Beaumont Wayne's major affiliation with Wayne State University, a top research center, underscores the academic amenities available to our program. We also are privileged to have affiliations with Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine and Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine.

The ultimate mission of the Family Medicine Residency Program is to prepare its residents to practice in any environment. This means teaching our residents how to do everything within the broad scope of Family Medicine while tailoring it to individual resident areas of interest. During their time with us, our residents learn state-of-the-art, evidence-based adult, pediatric, geriatric and obstetrical care. This training occurs within the Circle-of-Care model that is foundational to our philosophy. In the Circle-of-Care, the same doctor cares for the patient as he or she transitions through different healthcare settings, including the outpatient center, the hospital, and senior housing. We do this in the setting of practice or team-based care.

With the growing need for healthcare in the elderly population, we have a strong Geriatric training for our residents. The Geriatric fellowship and our unique House calls program provide excellent opportunities for a well-rounded experience. Additional focus areas of our program are procedural training, practice management and ambulatory pediatrics. In our Family Medicine Center more than 409 of our patients are pediatric and more than 109 are aged less than 1 year old. Graduates of our program are trained to be proficient in a wide variety of procedures and educated about managing a medical practice and the business of medicine. Our culturally diverse faculty and residents coupled with our diverse community struggle with health disparities has challenged us t has challenged us to deepen our involvement with the community around us.

Beyond our primary goal of comprehensive clinical competence, we are committed to developing our residents as 21st century leaders in health care. We inform and encourage residents to become active members and leaders in the local, state, and national academies such as the MAFP. At Beaumont Wayne our residents learn about systems of care and how to improve patient safety through hospital committee involvement and quality improvement. While we realize our residents have varying interests and ideas about what scope of practice their future career will include, we believe that it is our mission to ensure that they can do any and all of these things if they so choose, in any environment. We continually strive to meet, not only, the needs of our current residents, but also, their needs as a physician 5 and 10 years from now. Our residents choose the program for this reason.

Our accredited Family Medicine Residency Program looks forward to welcoming ten new residents, both Osteopathic and Allopathic, each year. New residents quickly become part of our Family Medicine residency “family” and start to develop their skills in Beaumont's large community medical center setting. Our faculty love to teach and our program fosters supportive, collegial relationships between residents and faculty in order to help residents reach their goals. The curriculum offers a wide variety of primary care and subspecialty experiences.

Our continued accreditation, without citations, by the Residency Review Committee allows us to keep fine-tuning all elements of our program to maintain excellence and growth. The launch of our Maternal Newborn Health Fellowship in 2008 and growth to 3 Fellows in 2019 are major testaments to this effort. We continue to focus our efforts on the patient centered medical home model. We have a fully integrated EMR. We are committed to academic preparedness as evidenced by our graduates’ ongoing 100% board passage rate. Likewise, we regard our 100% Match fill rate over many years as another vital sign of a healthy program. We are proud of our program’s history and excited about its’ future! On behalf of the entire faculty and residents, I wish to thank you for the time and consideration you are giving our program and invite your inquiries!
