The goal of the Combined Internal Medicine/Pediatrics Program is to develop excellent primary care physicians who are able to care for patients from birth to geriatrics, in community and hospital settings. By training to become both a Pediatrician and an Internist, the physician does not limit himself or herself to only primary care - all of the subspecialties in Medicine and Pediatrics become available.

The program has been carefully planned to allow physicians to attain the goal of practicing as a combined internist/pediatrician. They are challenged to care for patients of all ages under the supervision of senior residents and capable attending physicians, from the NICU to the Geriatric Clinic. Clinical material may seem immense but under the guidance of Medicine/Pediatrics practitioners one will learn disease processes as a continuum.

Knowledge of medicine is important, but this program provides much more.  Residents participate in training designed to perfect skills essential to the art of medicine, including:

At the completion of the residency, one will be capable of caring for any age patient in or out of the hospital and be ready to practice in our system of medical care as it exists today.

Pediatric Program Overview

The educational program in Pediatrics is composed of a core of full-time, hospital-based pediatric specialists and subspecialists, as well as a select group of private pediatricians who are dedicated to pediatrics education.  The Pediatrics curriculum is designed to provide a broad educational experience in the care of hospitalized and ambulatory infants, children and adolescents.

Beaumont Children’s Hospital offers an excellent Pediatric training environment.  Highlights include:

• NACHRI-designated children’s hospital
  
• Pediatric-specific level 4 epilepsy center, one of 35 in the entire country
  
• 40-bed pediatric unit, 8-bed PICU, and 64-bed level IIIB NICU; an 8-bed adolescent unit is under construction
  
• Level II Pediatric Trauma Center staffed 24/7 by pediatric emergency medicine fellowship-trained physicians
  
• Dedicated Pediatric ER which cares for more than 100,000 children and teens every year
  
• Children’s Miracle Network Hospital - one of four in the State of Michigan
  
• A busy Ambulatory Pediatric Clinic that cares for over 7,500 patients each year
  
• A state-of-the-art Obstetrical Service with approximately 7,000 births per year. Medicine/Pediatric residents jointly manage high-risk obstetrical patients and infants with obstetricians, perinatologists, and neonatologists

Internal Medicine Program Overview

The Medical Service is large and diverse. Residents have primary responsibility for all patients on the teaching services. Medical residents rotate through general and subspecialty medical units, the Coronary Care Unit, the Intensive Care Unit, the "Staff" Medicine Services, the Emergency Center, and various elective subspecialty rotations. Teaching rounds are held by each of these services.

Beaumont has many salaried and/or hospital-based physicians involved in the teaching program, representing each of the subspecialties recognized by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Many members of the teaching faculty for the Department of Medicine hold appointments at Oakland University/William Beaumont School of Medicine, Wayne State University School of Medicine or the University of Michigan Medical School. Teaching rounds with attending physicians and consultants are conducted a minimum of three times per week and are in addition to daily work rounds, noon conferences, and morning reports. Beaumont offers accredited fellowships in Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, Infectious Diseases, Oncology and Transfusion Medicine.
