About the Residency

The Internal Medicine Residency Program at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak is provided for physicians who desire a career in general internal medicine or one of its subspecialties. Our goal is to provide a structured educational environment for the training of internists, and to provide each trainee with an experience of such high quality that graduates of our program have the option of pursuing a career in either primary care general internal medicine or an internal medicine subspecialty.

To accomplish this goal, we offer residents a broad array of clinical and didactic experiences designed to refine the clinical and intellectual skills needed by a modern internist. We augment these experiences with carefully designed, individualized curricula that are tailored to the unique training needs of prospective primary care internists and future medical subspecialists. By participating in these activities under the supervision of committed faculty, a resident in our program develops the ability to think and act independently with the compassion and skill of a knowledgeable clinician.

Internal Medicine Patient Population

The size of the Teaching Service is under the control of the Residency Program Director, who also monitors the types of patient illnesses represented on the Teaching Service. Residents manage a cross-section of the patients admitted to the Department of Medicine, and all patients admitted to critical care areas of the department. Patients not admitted to the teaching service are cared for by attending physicians with the assistance of hospital-based general internists and/or physician extenders. This structure limits admission volume and daily census to educationally appropriate levels, and provides an inpatient experience for the residents that emphasizes continuity of care and progressive responsibility.

Beaumont Hospital is situated in southern Oakland County, a very diverse area with a population from a wide range of racial and socioeconomic backgrounds. This diversity creates an outstanding opportunity to manage a wide variety of medical conditions and fascinating diseases. Many of the patients under the care of our residents are from underserved populations.

Internal Medicine Medical Student Programs

Medical students are an integral part of the department's educational programs. Students from the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine (OUWB) receive their clinical training in physical diagnosis at Beaumont. Third-year students from OUWB complete their required clerkship in internal medicine by rotating on our inpatient general medicine services and in the outpatient clinics. Fourth-year medical students from OUWB complete their required sub-internship in internal medicine at Beaumont, Royal Oak.

Additionally, elective rotations are provided for fourth-year students in each of the department's subspecialty divisions. This broad student involvement greatly contributes to the general academic environment, and allows our residents to function as teachers.
