Residents

Meet our residents

PGY-1

Adler_Alexander

Alexander Adler, DO

Alex grew up in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. He studied Biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and attended Kansas City University for medical school. He is a sports enthusiast, playing and watching as many sports as possible. His latest sports passion has been pickleball, and he travels around the country to play in tournaments. Outside sports and medicine, he enjoys trivia, craft breweries, traveling, video games, and sci-fi movies (comic book and Star Wars especially). His PM&R interests include sports medicine, musculoskeletal/spine, EMG, and traumatic brain injury.

Alex chose Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak for the supportive and team-oriented culture exhibited by residents and faculty, the well-rounded nature of the program, and the categorical set-up.

Garmo_Michael

Michael Garmo, MD

Michael is originally from West Bloomfield, Michigan and attended Oakland University in Rochester where he gained a passion for human anatomy. He pursued a career in medicine and attended Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit. His PM&R interests include musculoskeletal injuries, interventional spine procedures, and spinal cord medicine. His favorite hobbies include weightlifting, playing video-games, bike-riding, and he spends a lot of time wishing the Detroit Lions will one day be able to put it all together and win a Superbowl.

Michael chose Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak’s PM&R program for the opportunity to train in and serve the community he grew up in and to become a well-rounded, confident physical medicine and rehabilitation physician.

Guzzardo_Gabrielle

Gabrielle Guzzardo, MD

Gabrielle grew up in the Detroit suburb of Shelby Twp and subsequently moved to her second favorite city, Chicago, to attend Loyola University. There she studied Psychology, received a master's in Biomedical Science, and fell in love with jazz music. She then graduated from MSU's College of Human Medicine after working clinically in Flint. She was grateful to return home for residency to her favorite city and regal cat, Phoebe. Gabrielle loves to be creative and indulge in anything that makes her laugh. She is currently attempting to learn how to roller-skate after being a blader all her life. When she's feeling less adventurous, she likes to enjoy yoga, brunching with friends, and watching videos of Rihanna. Her interests in PM&R include sports, interventional spine, and ultrasound.

She chose Beaumont for the program’s strong training in MSK medicine while still supporting diverse interests and opportunities in neuro rehab. Additionally, it was the comfortable culture and unique opportunity to learn from a private group that sealed the deal.

Yewah_Raisa

Raisa Yewah, MD

Raisa was born in Cameroon, West Africa, but moved to the US very young and grew up in East Lansing, MI. She studied Chemistry and French at Hope College in Holland, MI, moved to Ann Arbor and obtained a Master’s in Public Health degree at University of Michigan, and to round out her seemingly everlasting career as a full-time student, she obtained her MD from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. She has many interests - a few include traveling, eating out at various restaurants, baking (and eating her baked goods), participating in and watching sports games, and attending music concerts/festivals. If she was not destined to become a physician, Raisa would have definitely enjoyed being an unqualified traveling food connoisseur. Within PM&R, Raisa enjoys sports medicine, musculoskeletal/spine, and general PM&R. Fun fact, Raisa was a collegiate athlete, scoring goals during her 4-year run as a striker on the women's soccer team. She still plays, just has a longer recovery time.

Raisa chose Beaumont PM&R because of the friendly and tight-knit atmosphere amongst both residents and attendings. She felt it would be a great place to get comprehensive training in PM&R with the added benefit of learning about the private practice model as a resident.

PGY-2

Bauer_Raymond

Raymond Bauer, MD

Ray was born in Grosse Pointe, MI and currently resides in his hometown. He fulfilled his childhood dream of attending U of M for undergrad and has always bled maize and blue. After graduating from Ann Arbor, Ray completed medical school at Wayne State University. When Ray isn’t dominating local pickleball courts or running long distances, he’s cheering on his Wolverines with his beloved dog Miss Maizey. Ray prides himself on his hydration levels and lives by the saying, “A Propel a day keeps the doctor away”. Ray’s specific interests in PM&R include diagnosis and management of neuromuscular disorders.

Ray chose Beaumont for its exposure to a diversity of pathologies and strong teaching curriculum. He appreciates the family-like atmosphere amongst residents and attendings.

Khader_Dalia

Dalia Khader, MD

Dalia is a native to Troy, MI but happily resides wherever there’s coffee. She developed her coffee addiction at Michigan State University for undergrad and Central Michigan University for medical school. Her many hobbies include shopping, her book club, happy hour, yoga, and her many social engagements with friends and family. If Dalia is not at the hospital, you can certainly find her at a friend's engagement party, happy hour, or at her cabin. Other than turning the resident work room into her personal yoga studio, Dalia is particularly interested in learning US techniques, mastering high patient volumes, and honing in on all other procedural skills.

Dalia chose Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak for those reasons above as well as the personable nature of all of the residents and attendings, the close proximity to her family, the opportunity to learn within the private practice structure, and the integrated internship year.

Roth_Eden

Eden Roth, DO

Eden reigns from West Bloomfield, Michigan. Ranging from tones of autumn amber to winter blue, Eden's scrub selection stays on fleek-no matter the season. Her personal favorite, forest green, dually represents her undergraduate and medical school alma mater, Michigan State University. Outside of the hospital, she enjoys a mimosa with brunch, reading a good book, and overtaking settlements in Catan.

Eden chose Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak because of the camaraderie between residents, education from attending physicians, and opportunity to serve a diverse population on the inpatient rehab floor. Her current interests within the field are pediatrics and interventional spine.

Sassack_Brett

Brett Sassack, DO

Brett, named after the WWF wrestler Bret the hit man heart, grew up in the very tropical island of Grosse Ile, Michigan. He was always a Michigan fan but after graduating from Wayne State University for undergrad, he very quickly learned that the grass is always greener at Michigan State when he went to MSU-COM for medical school. In his free time, you’ll find him working out at 5 am, golfing, touring the local breweries, or spending the weekend at the lake. Other than spending time in the trees of 6 South, Brett is particularly interested in mastering functional anatomy, musculoskeletal diagnosis and treatment, and procedures.

He chose Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak's program because he felt the program promotes the growth of their residents as people and physicians. He also likes the close resident-attending relationships, the support provided, and the reputation of the program.

Michael would also like to incorporate osteopathic manipulative medicine into his patient care. Outside of medicine, his hobbies include BBQ smoking, weightlifting, Dungeons & Dragons, board games and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

Michael chose Beaumont-Royal Oak's program due to the supportive culture created by the attendings and residents. He felt that this program would give him the opportunity to become confident-not just competent- as a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician.

Sielski-Dustin

Dustin Sielski, MD

Dustin grew up Monroe, MI and went to the University of Michigan-Dearborn for his undergraduate education where he played basketball for four years.  He completed his medical school training at Wayne State University.  In his free time, Dustin enjoys going to craft breweries, playing sports, playing video games, and binging shows on Netflix.

Dustin chose Beaumont-Royal Oak after seeing that the residents were great coworkers but also friends, and for the great opportunities to move forward in his career.

Wilhelm-Kurt

Kurt Wilhelm, MD

Kurt Wilhelm is native to the metro Detroit area and was born in the same hospital where he is now completing his residency training. His interests in physiatry and sports medicine stem from his experience as a patient, rehabilitating a knee injury during his college football career at Denison University. He enjoys staying active by cycling, and rode his bike from Portland to San Francisco during some time off during medical school at Wayne State University

Kurt chose Beaumont-Royal Oak for the team-centered atmosphere among residents, and an approachable faculty that valued each residents academic interests.

PGY-4

Bazil_Timothy

Timothy Bazil, DO

Tim graduated from MSU in neuroscience. He’s incredibly knowledgeable and dedicated to his work and never fails to help a fellow co-resident out. His perfectly coiffed hair makes him easy to spot around the hospital. Off work, you’ll often find him booking a tee time. He loves to ski, play the guitar, and drive his bright blue muscle car - his beloved Mustang.

Tim chose Beaumont-Royal Oak for the broad curriculum, high patient volume and diversity, and the balance of dynamic instruction and autonomy. The residents work cohesively, making workdays enjoyable.

Garelik_Lauren

Lauren Garelik, DO

Lauren is a native Metro Detroiter. She attended Michigan State University for both undergrad and medical school. In her free time she enjoys playing golf, boating, traveling, finding new places to eat, and hanging with friends and family.

Lauren chose Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak for the close-knit working relationship between attendings and resident along with increasing autonomy through the 4 years of residency.

Lou_Jesse

Jesse Lou, MD

Most of the world is his home as he’s lived in Taiwan, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Boston, and now Royal Oak, Michigan. He is a mediocre beach volleyball player but always willing to put forth his best efforts. He enjoys purchasing kombucha in bulk from Costco, delusional in his thinking that it is the best available. He relies heavily on charm with decent amounts of success. His life revolves around Peloton, but his true passion is eating frivolously.

Jesse chose Beaumont-Royal Oak for the excellent musculoskeletal training, tight knit learning environment, and integrated internship year.

Schumaker_Alex

Alex Schumaker, MD

Alex completed his undergraduate education at Albion College and received bachelor’s degrees in the fields of biology and mathematics. He then completed his medical school training at Wayne State University School of Medicine. He loves spending time with his wife, one-year-old daughter, and ninety-pound-Bouvier when he is home from work. During his free time, he relaxes by running long distances, reading epic fantasy series, analyzing baseball statistics, teaching his daughter how to play piano, and trying to pick up new hobbies. His interests within the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation include acute and chronic management of spinal cord injury along with electrodiagnostic testing. He is pursuing a fellowship in Spinal Cord Injury Medicine.

Alex chose Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak for many reasons. He likes the strong affiliation with the medical school that allows him to pursue his passion for medical education. He also appreciates the high volume and clinical diversity of patients. He feels he will be well equipped with the knowledge and experience to enter any practice model he desires and to pursue leadership roles within the healthcare field and community.
