Research

The Department of Diagnostic Radiology requires each resident to complete a research project during their residency that is presented at the local, state or national level.  Research projects are ongoing and developing in multiple subspecialty areas, providing the residents the opportunity to get involved in research in their area of interest.

• endless research opportunities with encouraging staff who are readily willing to mentor residents.  In 2016-2017, our department published 18 peer reviewed papers and had 39 presentations and 20 abstracts in national meetings around the country, in addition to 9 book chapter publications and 2 electronic/media presentations
  
• the residency program supports residents interested in exploring academic medicine by sending residents each year to major national meetings such as the Society of Interventional Radiology and the Symposium for Clinical Interventional Oncology.
  
• the program allows five meeting days per year.  Additional days (2 nights/3 days) are available for meeting presentations.  Presentation expenses are paid for by the department.
  
• resident projects have been recognized with awards at various meetings each year
  
• annual Interventional Radiology Symposium for Medical Students in which IR residents and fellows assist medical students with simulated IR procedural experiences which would be available to them in an IR residency program.
  
• in addition to the many interdepartmental research projects, the close relationship with Oakland University has permitted an even more extensive network of associates.  As an example, the association with health economists at OU has facilitated an ongoing project on the cost benefit analysis of an interventional procedure.
  
• the collaborative work between our body imaging and interventional radiology divisions detected the root cause of displacement of power injectable PICC lines tip during CT contrast injection, which has not been known before.  This work was published by AJR
  
• residents will be encouraged to collaborate with IR faculty on a research project during PGY 5-6.
