Overview
The mission of the Beaumont Health Neurologic Physical Therapy Residency program is to prepare the resident trainee in advanced clinical practice, to accelerate innovative analytical thinking & reasoning skills, and to provide cutting-edge professional development in neurologic physical therapy while providing compassionate and extraordinary care for patients with neurologic deficits within a multidisciplinary team environment. The goals are to provide current evidence-based clinical care with respect and integrity paramount and at the forefront of all patient interactions, within a patient-centered care model, promote excellence in education, to embark on clinical research, and engagement in the community we serve.
The program is approximately 12 months in length and involves a comprehensive and well-rounded education within a 1100 bed tertiary, teaching and research hospital that received certification as an “Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center”. The physical therapy rehabilitation residency will include clinical work, a didactic component, and research and community outreach opportunities.
The BHNPT resident will provide approximately 30 hours of clinical care weekly alongside a 1:1 mentoring faculty expert. The resident will work with patients spanning the patient’s lifetime within these clinical environments: acute care, intensive care unit, neurological inpatient rehabilitation unit, pediatric inpatient and outpatient settings, and outpatient neurological therapy. The variety of patient diagnoses range from pediatric & adult stroke, anoxic brain injuries, traumatic brain injuries, Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, vestibular disorders, and traumatic & non-traumatic spinal cord injuries. Residents can partake in various specialty clinics & educational seminars, i.e. wheelchair clinic, prosthetic/orthotic fabrication, Physical Medicine &Rehabilitation seminars, and Rehab Team Rounds/Conferences. The didactic component will be provided by the Neuro Consortium that consists of webinars and a journal club while certain foundation courses will be supplemented by our own faculty experts.
