Women's Health Physical Therapy Residency

Clinical Residency in Women’s Health Rehabilitation

Beaumont Health offers a Women’s Health Physical Therapy Residency program that provides training in current, evidence-based clinical care while promoting excellence in education, embarking on clinical research and engaging in the communities served.

Overview

The program's mission is to:

  • prepare the resident trainee in advanced clinical practice
  • accelerate innovative analytical thinking and reasoning skills
  • provide leading-edge professional development in women’s health physical therapy

During the year-long program, residents will learn to provide patient and family-centered care through a comprehensive, well-rounded education within a 1,100 bed tertiary, teaching and research hospital. The program includes clinical work, a didactic component, research, and community outreach opportunities.

The program provides approximately 30 hours of clinical care and 10 hours of 1:1 mentoring with a faculty expert.

The resident will work with patients of all ages in Beaumont’s outpatient pediatric and adult settings, and the Women’s Urology Center.

Residents will also have exposure to acute care diagnoses, including:

  • neoplasms of breast
  • endometriosis
  • diastasis recti
  • female athlete triad
  • gynecologic conditions/surgery
  • high-risk pregnancy
  • menopause
  • osteoporosis
  • pelvic adhesions
  • pelvic girdle pain
  • pudendal neuralgia
  • fecal incontinence/encopresis
  • urinary frequency/incontinence
  • interstitial cystitis

Residents can partake in various specialty clinics and educational seminars such as the Women’s Urology Center, cancer survivorship clinics and grand rounds. At the conclusion of the program, the resident will have extensive experience in performing both internal vaginal and anorectal examinations and treatments, and will be proficient in obtaining subjective histories that relate to bowel, bladder and sexual dysfunctions. The resident will also develop an in-depth knowledge of pelvic floor and abdominal anatomy and function.

The didactic component will be provided by our faculty experts, in-services, grand rounds, a lymphedema certification class, pelvic floor rehabilitation courses ( APTA or Herman and Wallace Institute), and MedBridge.

Beaumont Health Women’s Health Residency gained candidate status from ABPTRFE. Though achievement of candidate status signifies satisfactory progress toward accreditation, it does not assure that the program will be accredited.
